preconception lifestyle for men

When considering having a baby, men should examine their lifestyle and what may be even “mild” intakes of certain substances. And remember, it takes about three months for sperm to mature. To ensure healthy sperm are available for fertilization when a couple starts trying to conceive, changes to lifestyle need to be made four months prior. Since both prospective mom and dad need to adopt healthy habits well before conception, there is plenty of opportunity to tackle lifestyle changes together.

smoking

The effects of smoking on male fertility in the preconception period may be as considerable as those of smoking women. Smoking can lead to reduced sperm production, lower sperm motility (its ability to move) as well as changes in sperm shape. When it comes to conception, the shape and motility of sperm is actually more important than sperm count. Smoking may also contribute to impotence. Vitamin C, which protects sperm from damage, is depleted faster in men who smoke.

If your partner smokes and isn’t convinced of the damage to his own fertility, he needs to be reminded that passive smoke affects you as well. If your partner smokes around you, it may take you longer to get pregnant. Passive smoke also seriously jeopardizes the health of soon-to-be mom and baby.

alcohol

Alcohol – the social lubricant many of us have come to rely upon to help us relax. Drinking may enhance sex drive, but in the long run alcohol affects male fertility by leading to impotence, changes in sperm shape and a reduction in sex hormones.

Heavy drinking causes changes in the shape of sperm that can lead to impotency. It can also interfere with sperm development. Excessive alcohol can reduce zinc levels, which plays an important role in making sperm, protecting the genetic material in sperm and helping sperm to live as long as possible after ejaculation. The good news is these effects can most likely be reversed by sobering up.

drugs and medications

With respect to over-the-counter and prescription medications, as many as possible should be removed. Men should talk to their healthcare providers if they’re currently taking any medications to find out if they should continue taking them or not while they’re trying to conceive. Some medications known to affect male fertility include certain treatments for ulcers, urinary tract infections and gastrointestinal problems. Steroids used for asthma, skin conditions or arthritis, as well as chemotherapy and radiation also need to be reviewed with a healthcare provider. Some medications can also reduce sex drive, such as certain antidepressants, prolactin stimulants, antihypertensive drugs and testosterone antagonists.

The use of recreational drugs, such as marijuana and cocaine, can also diminish male fertility by damaging the sperm. Marijuana results in lower sperm count and poor sperm motility, while cocaine may reduce sex drive.

stress

Reducing stress can make a big difference in sperm production. Stress at the time of ejaculation can result in too little or no sperm in the semen. Long term, stress can alter a man’s normal functions, such as digestion and sleep, and his ability to ward off disease and illness. These long-term issues can impact his future fertility.

caffeine

Not much is yet known on the effects of caffeine on male fertility. From the limited information available, it seems safe for dads-to-be to consume caffeine in moderate amounts. This is considered approximately 300 mg a day, or the equivalent of three brewed coffees. After their three cups, it is prudent for men to stick to decaffeinated coffee, tea and colas.
