None of us wish to feel unwell, and the symptoms associated with infertility can, of course, be less than pleasant. But as unpleasant as these symptoms may be, they’ll make you aware that there may be a problem and prompt you to visit your healthcare provider sooner, rather than later. Your symptoms will help your healthcare provider understand the cause of your infertility, speeding up your diagnosis and bringing you and your partner one step closer to your goal.
You won’t always experience physical symptoms associated with infertility, or there may be only subtle signs that something is wrong. That’s why it’s important for you to know and understand your body and monitor it closely, especially if you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a while. Physical changes such as irregular periods or the absence of menstruation, pain in your pelvic area, chronic acne and weight gain can all act as clues, but it may not be immediately obvious they could be associated with infertility.
Descriptions of symptoms that can be linked to female infertility are organized here according to how they manifest, or present, themselves. Hormonal symptoms such as chronic acne, excessive hair growth or an inconsistent pattern in your basal body temperature, may declare an underlying hormonal problem. Certain infections can alert you and your doctor to a condition that may affect your fertility, such as pelvic inflammatory disease or immunological problems.
If you aren’t getting your periods, you may have polycystic ovarian syndrome or hyperprolactinemia, while very heavy periods can be due to endometriosis or a fibroid tumor. These menstrual symptoms should prompt you to visit your healthcare provider for timely testing and diagnosis. Certain types of pain symptoms and physical symptoms should also be checked out, including cramping, painful sex, a hernia, high fever or rapid change in weight.
